Le casque lourd M-1 est réalisé en acier au manganèse Hadfield avec un bord rapporté en acier inoxydable jointant sur l'avant du casque. La fixation de la jugulaire est assurée, sur les premiers modèles, au moyen de deux anneaux rectangulaires soudés sur les extrémités intérieures de la bombe et, à partir de 1943, par un système de boucles rectangulaires articulées autour de deux charnières soudées au casque en trois points. Liner, Helmet, M-1 Hawley Paper Liner Casque léger fabriqué par la firme Hawley en fibres compressées (carton pâte) et
recouvert d'une toile épaisse collée et peinte. Comme ce type de casque était très peu résistant, il a été remplacé
en 1943 par un nouveau modèle dit "New Type" en fibres compressées imprégnées de résine synthétique.
